How to find an electrician

29 November 2016

If you find yourself exclaiming ‘I need an electrician!’ help is at hand. Googling electricians in the area is a good start. Online registers have made finding an electrician near you easier than ever. Websites like www.useasparky.com.au and www.servicecentral.com.au can help you find an electrician in your area and compare quotes with ease.

However, all electricians are not created equal and there are some important selection criteria you should use to find an electrician that you can rely on.

For example, you’ll need to check that your electrician has a valid license in your state, and seek proof that they have the appropriate insurance and liability cover.

Here are three other selection criteria you can use help you find an electrician you can count on:

1. Check their references

Past work is an indication of future work. Ask the electricians you’re considering to provide references from previous customers they’ve worked for. If they are unwilling to do so, it could be an indication that they lack experience or have not built positive relationships with their previous customers.

2. Ask for their memberships

Most experienced electricians will hold memberships to a range of professional or trade associations, such as National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA). These associations often require their members to demonstrate specific core competencies, accreditation and experience levels in order to join the association. Holding membership in such associations is a strong signal that the electrician in question is a quality operator who is committed to becoming a master of their trade.

3. Talk to your electrical retailer

If you’ve purchased lighting or other electrical products from a retailer, ask them about local electricians they can recommend. Word-of-mouth is a powerful tool, and your local electrical retailer will likely have heard plenty of feedback about excellent – and below-par – electricians their customers have employed.
Investing a little time to ensure you find a quality electrician you can count on could save you a major headache in the long run.
