3 ways to lower your electricity bill (in under a month)

20 March 2018

We’ve all heard the stock standard responses on saving electricity bills: turn off your lights, wait till the evening to do your laundry, keep your fridge full.

Blah, blah, blah.

There are literally hundreds of ways you can save on your electricity bills – some of them easy, some of them requiring a little more effort (like conducting your own electricity energy audit). At the end of the day, we all want a quick fix.

We’ve got three ways to lower your electricity bills in under 30 days – You’re welcome.

Add a couple of solar panels and see your energy bills take a nosedive

One of the most effective ways to reduce your power bill is to reduce the amount of electricity you use.

Solar panels make this process 100 times easier.

Solar energy pays itself off from day one (and takes 24 hours to install).

There are a heap of solar options on the market, and you can store that sweet energy from the sun in a cost-effective solar battery.

Say goodbye to checking the kids bedroom every 30 minutes to see if their lights are still on.

For the average home, solar power installation takes a working day – but of course, the more panels required means it can take longer. It’s a super cost effective and painless process – with the added bonus of saving big on your energy costs.

We wrote a whole blog post on installing solar panels – check it out.

Get smart on phantom loads and save big

Phantom loads are the hidden nemesis to your energy bill. They can blow out your energy bill by $100 a year.

Who willingly flushes $100 down the drain?

Not us, that’s for sure.

What are phantom loads (otherwise known as standby power)?

Phantom loads are simply the energy that is used by an appliance when it’s not in use. Examples include:

  • TV
  • Printers
  • Computers
  • Audio speakers
  • Microwave

And the list goes on…

It’s super easy to cut down on phantom loads – you just need to flick the switch on your powerpoints. This is easy when you buy a powerboard with individual switches. Having your TV, Audio, Playstation etc. plugged into a powerboard mean all you have to do when you’re done is flick the switch at the main powerpoint. Remembering to turn off the powerboards (at the power point) or power point when you’re finished with your appliance can save you big bucks over the year (plus it’s better for the environment!)

Replace your lights with LEDs

LED lights are by far one of the best electricity saving tools you should be taking advantage of. Their benefits are wide ranging, and they are easy to install.

Beacon Lighting have listed some of the key benefits of LED lights:

  • Use about 85% less energy than halogen or incandescent lights
  • Use about 30% less energy than CFL lights
  • Save you money on your power bills!
  • Last between 15,000-50,000 hours
  • Reach full brightness instantly
  • Contain no mercury or lead
  • Emit no UV rays or infrared radiation
  • Operate at a much cooler temperature, making them a safer option than halogens
  • Cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce landfill

As you can see, the benefits of LEDS are extensive – not only are you saving on electricity, you’re investing in a longer lasting and environmentally friendly option.
